The research team at the University of Porto, Portugal selected 29 dogs with at least 6 months of living with their owners. They recorded the yawn of the owners and strangers, then turned it back on to the dogs. Specific records show that half of them yawned after hearing yawn coming from the recorder.
Scientists say dogs will react when they hear a "yawn" sound signal, even if they can't see it. The special thing is that dogs can recognize yawns from people they know.
'These results show that dogs are able to empathize with human behavior , ' said Karine Silva of the University of Porto in Portugal.
