According to Mr. Le The Long - Deputy Director of Department of Agriculture and Rural Development cum Head of Thanh Hoa Forest Protection Department, the establishment of a conservation area for rare and precious coniferous flora with the goal of preserving and developing ecosystems. naturally, promoting special values ​​of biodiversity, focusing on six rare and precious conifer species including: pine tree (scientific name Pinus kwangtungensis), pinnacle peak (Cephalotaxus mannii), narrow striped parts ( Amentotaxus argotaenia, broad-striped pineapple (Amentotaxus yunnanensis), limestone red pine (Taxus chinensis), long-leaf bamboo pine (Podocarpus neriifolius). This reserve has a total area of ​​646.95ha, located in the two districts of highland Quan Hoa and Quan Son.

Nam Dong rare and precious gymnosperms conservation area will manage, protect and develop assigned special-use forests; implement activities to preserve natural ecosystems, endemic species, restore forest resources, conserve natural landscapes, rare and precious conifer species; developing projects and projects on socio-economic development, expanding livelihoods for population communities in the core zone and buffer zone of the reserve .

The establishment of this protected area contributes to the conservation of biodiversity, the preservation of endangered genetic resources of rare and precious gymnosperms.
