Euro 1.7 million to build saola conservation area

The International Nature Conservation Fund (WWF) has decided to sponsor 1.796 million Euro to focus on protecting saola populations in 2 districts of Tay Giang, Dong Giang and Quang Nam.

On the afternoon of March 28, Mr. Dang Dinh Nguyen, Director of Quang Nam Saola Conservation Area Management Board, said that the International Nature Conservation Fund (WWF) has decided to sponsor 1.796 million Euro to focus on protection. The reserve is 16,500 hectares in two districts of Tay Giang and Dong Giang (adjacent to Thua Thien - Hue province). The project is implemented in 4 years (2011-2014), mainly strengthening conservation capacity for saola and Quang Nam Biodiversity Corridor.

Sao la (scientific name Pseudoryx nghetinhensis ) is a particularly rare wildlife, named in the world red book, recorded only in the forest areas of Thua Thien - Hue and Quang Nam (photos), with about 200 individual.

In addition to saola, there are two rare forest elephants in Quang Nam. However, the management and protection of this forest elephant has not been given adequate attention. There have been 4 forest elephants killed in over 7 years.
