This project will help make predictions about extreme weather events such as observing global warming.
Sentinel-3B satellites, part of a system of satellites that monitor the earth, were launched into orbit by rockot missiles, from the Plesetsk space center, in the Arkhangelsk region, northwestern Russia at 17h57, GMT on April 25
The satellite will join the Sentinel-3A satellite that has been in orbit since 2016, to collect data on altitude and sea surface temperatures, to provide more accurate weather forecasts, as well as the impact of rising temperature trends on earth.
Data collected from satellites can help transport companies chart their routes more efficiently and can be used to track forest fires, water pollution or oil spills. .
Project Copernicus was described by the European Space Agency (ESA) as the most ambitious earth observation project ever. The European Union and the European Space Agency have also pledged more than 8 billion euros ($ 9.8 billion) in funding for this project by 2020.
The launch of Copernicus project became especially urgent after Europe lost contact with Envisat observing satellite in 2012 after 10 years of exploitation.
