The young, unnamed, was born on December 6 at the Bassin d'Arcachon Zoo in the province of Gironde. His mother, Nabila, six years old, was moved to the zoo under the black rhino breeding program in Europe, where he was paired with a male named Dazanty.

Baby rhinoceros at birth was about 35 - 40kg. Because it is male, it is expected to play an important role in preserving the species as an adult, as most of the black rhinos in Bassin d'Arcachon are females.

According to the zoo's spokesperson, this is the second black rhino to be born in Europe this year and the first to be born in captivity in France.

Black rhinos have been widely distributed in the sub-Saharan region, but poaching has led to a sharp decline in the species population, at a time only 2,485 children worldwide. Thanks to the efforts of conservationists, the number of species has now increased to nearly 5,000, but is still extremely critically endangered.
