Find out the reason why more and more young people get cancer
Research shows that premature biological aging is directly proportional to cancer patients' rejuvenation .
In an effort to find the cause of the increase in cancers in young people, scientists have discovered a remarkable underlying factor: The association with premature biological aging in cancer patients. rejuvenation letter.
According to CNN, the research results were announced by experts from the University of Washington School of Medicine. They looked at the medical records of 148,724 people aged 37 to 54 who participated in a large data register called UK Biobank.
'We all know cancer is a disease related to aging. However, it is actually happening in younger people ," said Dr. Yin Cao, associate professor of surgery at Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis and lead author of the study.
Age is more than just the number of candles on a birthday cake. It's also the wear and tear on the body, caused by lifestyle, stress and genetics, sometimes called a person's biological age , she adds.
Her research team focused on nine blood-based markers that have been shown to correlate with biological age:
- Albumin: A protein made by the liver and decreases with age.
- Creatinine: A waste product in the blood resulting from protein digestion and the breakdown of muscle tissue; is a measure of kidney function. Lower levels correlate with better longevity.
- Glucose : With age, blood glucose remains at higher levels for longer periods of time after meals.
- C-reactive protein: Made by the liver in response to inflammation; Relatively higher levels correspond to more rapid aging.
- Lymphocytes percentage : The concentration of these white blood cells involved in immune function tends to decrease with age.
- Mean cell volume: A measure of the average size of red blood cells, which increases with age.
- RBC distribution width: The difference between the size of a person's smallest and largest red blood cells, which tends to increase with age.
- Alkaline phosphatase : An enzyme produced primarily by the liver and bones, which tends to increase with age.
- White blood cell count: White blood cell counts at the upper end of the normal range in the blood may correspond to greater aging.
These nine values are then fed into an algorithm called PhenoAge to calculate each person's biological age. Researchers then determined premature aging by comparing people's biological age with their calendar age.
Experts examined their cancer registry to find people diagnosed with early-stage cancer (before age 55) and found nearly 3,200 cases of premature aging with cancer.

People who age prematurely are susceptible to what cancer?
Researchers found that premature aging is associated with an increased risk of cancer. The strongest associations were seen with lung, stomach and intestine, and uterine cancers.
Ruiyi Tian, the graduate student who led the study, said the lung is more susceptible to aging than other tissue types because the lung has a poor ability to regenerate. She said stomach and bowel cancers are linked to inflammation, which increases with age.
People born in 1965 or later were also diagnosed with a 17% higher chance of premature aging than people born between 1950 and 1954.
The study also showed that those with the highest scores were twice as likely to develop early-stage lung cancer, 60% more likely to develop gastrointestinal tumors, and 80% more likely to develop uterine cancer.
