First successful penis transplant

For the first time in medical history, doctors at Stellenbosch University and Tygerberg Hospital (South Africa) have announced successful penile implants.

According to Bloomberg News, the patient lost genitals three years ago due to complications following circumcision. But he now appears to have recovered completely after a nine-hour operation last December. Doctors say the patient's penis is " functioning fully and able to give birth if desired ."

" We have proven that it can be successful - we can give someone a healthy body like their own ," said Frank Graewe, Head plastic surgery department at Stellenbosch University.

This is the second attempt to implant the penis in the world . The first time in China in 2006 was unsuccessful due to the patient having psychological problems after surgery.

The South African patient's surgeons hope his transplanted genitalia will recover completely after two years, but he has recovered much faster than expected.

" We were amazed by the recovery of the patient, " said surgeon Andre Van der Merwe, head of the department of urology at Stellenbosch University. He added that cases of amputation in South Africa were not uncommon because traditional circumcision was risky.

According to Dr. Van Der Merwe, the heroes of this surgery are the donor and his family. " They saved lives because they donated their hearts, lungs, liver, kidneys, skin, corneas and penises ."
