Foods to eliminate mouth odor from garlic

Garlic is a spice that makes the dish more delicious. However, the characteristic smell lingering in the breath made many people afraid to enjoy the food containing garlic.

This worry has recently been cleared by Ohio State University researchers through a familiar list of foods that are able to clean the breath. Accordingly, apples, lemon juice and peppermint are especially effective in reducing mouth odor. Green tea, parsley and spinach also have similar benefits.

The cause of the breath filled with garlic smell originates from allyl methyl sulphide (AMS). This is a compound in garlic and cannot be destroyed during digestion. It escapes through breath, sweat and odor.

From this facility, the study asked volunteers to eat raw garlic and measure the four most unpleasant odors of garlic. After that, they ate the foods that were supposed to be able to send off the smell of garlic and check the results with an odor meter.

According to research results published in Food Science magazine, fresh apples are a food that is especially effective for garlic odor treatment. The author of the study, Professor Sheryl Barringer, explains why the apple has the same effect as the ability to eliminate the enzymatic odor in garlic.

In addition, all foods that can effectively remove odors are rich in polyphenols, which can decompose garlic's pungent odor compounds. The acid of lemon also helps positively contribute to this deodorizing process. Professor Barringer also suggested combining these foods with garlic if possible to achieve the best odor removal effect.

In his previous study, Professor Barringer also discovered that the effect of smelling garlic's milk smells. Only a 200ml glass of milk can reduce AMS concentration by up to 50%. Accordingly, whole milk is more effective than skim milk, especially when taken with meals, instead of being taken afterwards.
