According to Independent, the wreck was discovered in the Caribbean seabed, off the northern coast of Haiti."The underwater terrain measurements and archaeological evidence may prove to be Columbus's Santa Maria , " said lead researcher Barry Clifford.
The above statement is based on the ship's underwater location. Clifford explained that previous research had identified the location of the fortress of La Navidad, where Columbus had erected in the area of present-day Haiti, after Santa Maria ran aground on Christmas Day in 1492. Existing wrecks are in line with the description in Columbus's diary.
CNN said, if this information is confirmed, this will be one of the most important underwater archaeological findings in history. The team's next plan is to talk to the Haitian government to conduct activities to survey the wreck details.
In 1492, Columbus and his crew departed from Spain on the Santa Maria, along with two other large ships, La Niña and La Pinta. In the journey to find a more favorable trade path to Asia, Columbus happened to discover the New World.
