Gossip - an essential part of life

We are different from the rest in the animal world. Chat helps people build trust, promote cooperation, create more complex societies than any species on earth.

Dr. Nicholas Emler, social psychologist at London University of Economics (UK) tracks 300 people to determine the average time they spend on chatting in conversations. The results show that rate is up to 80%.

' The language evolves to allow humans to chat and develop relationships. Baboons and chimpanzees create complex communities because individuals know many things about each other. But due to their inability to speak, they can only create groups of no more than 50 individuals. Thanks to language, people can create more complex societies than animals through chat. Gossip helps us know the people we have never met , "Emler said.

According to Emler, although chatting takes most of the conversation, only about 5% of the information is malicious. He stressed that women prefer to 'gossip' over men, but men like men like to talk about other people's looks twice as much as women.
