Great migrations

Leatherback turtles travel more than 20,000 km to feed, and the Arctic terns often cross the road more than 80,000 km to change their accommodation.

Many animals move thousands of kilometers each year to find food and pair. Here are some species that have the longest journey by vote of Newcomers.

Birds are the most famous migratory species and among them the world champion is the Arctic tern Sterna paradisaea. Every year, they fly all the way from the summer residence of Greenland and Iceland to the Weddell Sea off the South Pole. Because the Arctic Sea fly in a roundabout, many times they have to pass a distance of 81,600 km a year.

Arctic terns have a great advantage: they are seabirds so they can eat during the migration process. The land birds don't have that luck.

Among the subspecies of beaks, the most persistent flying species is Limosa lapponica baueri, which migrates from Alaska to Australia and New Zealand.

As a bird on land, they cannot eat on the sea. Therefore, the journey of 11,000 km without stopping is only lasting from 6 to 8 days. To complete the trip, they have to digest a part of the intestine, liver and kidney to reduce the volume and then recreate it. This is a continuous flight, not stopping to earn the longest food in the animal world.

A new study also confirms that the record of the tail-wrenches will be hard to break.

Among mammals, the record holder of the longest migratory migrant is the humpback whale Megaptera novaeangliae. They spend the summer eating food in the extremely cold waters and swimming to warm tropical waters to feed their babies during the winter.

By winter, humpback whales migrate north to Costa Rica over 8,300 km long.

Male humpback whales sing while swimming - probably to attract females. Males change the pitch of the voice to make sure the children can still hear in the distance. At the same time, they also move slowly, extending the journey to pair with many females.

Sea turtles are an extraordinary species among migratory reptiles. In 2008, it was noted that a leatherback turtle crossed the Pacific Ocean. From a beach nesting in Papua (Indonesia), it swims east to the feeding place off the state of Oregon (USA) and back. This crossing is at least 20,558 km long. This is the longest journey of a reptile ever recorded.

If there is not enough food, the leatherback turtle will swim down deeper than 600 m along the edge of the underground mountains and continental slopes. This is a deep depth that no reptile has ever reached.
