Green 'roof' and war on Earth warming

Michigan scientists say green roofs covering plants are becoming more and more popular in urban areas that can help people fight global warming.

According to the study, if replacing traditional roof materials in a Detroit-urban metropolitan area with a population of about 1 million people with trees, the results would be equivalent to cutting carbon. Dioxide is produced by 10,000 medium-sized trucks every year.

The results of the first study on the possibility of green roofs absorbing carbon and limiting climate change will be published in the upcoming issue, October 1, of Environmental Science & Technology.

In the study, Kristin Getter and colleagues pointed out that green roofs actually perform many functions at the same time. For example, they reduce heating and air conditioning costs, and retain water when heavy rains occur. Scientists have long known that green roofs also absorb CO2, a major greenhouse gas that contributes to global warming, but no studies have ever done so accurately. .

In this study, scientists measured carbon levels in soil and plant samples collected from 13 plant roofs in Michigan and Maryland within two years. They obtained detailed figures showing that growing green on rooftops in an urban area of 1 million people will help consume 55,000 tons of carbon - an achievement 'equivalent to banning 10,000 units. Medium-duty trucks operate every year. '
