How long should you wash your bed sheets?
We spend more than a third of our lives resting, but do you know where the bacteria and mold spawn are extremely powerful?
According to BusinessInsider, microbiologist at New York University, Philip Tierno, said that if left too long, living in the folds of the sheets could make us sick. He also recommends that sheets be cleaned once a week.
This advice is also emphasized by the authors of the study published last November 30 in the Journal of Clinical Allergy and Immunology. Specifically, after studying the reality of thousands of US households, researchers have discovered at least three allergens in more than 90% of households.
Bed sheets should be washed once a week.
When these agents creep into places where our mouth and nose are constantly in contact with the bed sheet, they will make you sneeze whether or not you have had allergies.
"Even if you're not allergic, you'll have an allergic reaction," Tierno added.
Another reason these types of bacteria sneak into our beds is because when we sleep, we unknowingly make their "dream" habitats warm and humid. The average person releases about 98 liters of sweat in bed every year. When the weather gets hot and warm, the moisture in your bed will become extremely ideal for mushroom growth. Each pillow that you lay can hold up to 16 different mushroom species!
Besides fungi and bacteria originating from humans (such as sweat, sputum and secretions from the anus), there are many kinds of foreign organisms coming from animals, pollen, soil, fiber, dust and feces (of insects, for example). In addition, the bed can contain some other chemical components used to produce them.
Although they are very small, after just a week, they will multiply significantly. Therefore Tierno recommends that people wash bed sheets and pillows once a week.
"If you touch dog feces on the road, you will want to wash it right away , " Tierno said. "Imagine the same thing with your bed. If you can see what's on it - certain things you can't see - you'll wonder if you still want to sleep on it. or not".
