How to manage when a high fever child causes seizures

When a child has a seizure due to a high fever, parents should not put their fingers in their mouth but wait for the seizure to leave the towel in their mouth to prevent the next seizure.

Children with too high fever may lead to seizures; But it doesn't affect the brain as many people think. Dr. Nguyen Tien Dung, former head of the Department of Pediatrics, Bach Mai Hospital (Hanoi) said, 20 years ago, he and his colleagues also thought that seizure fever caused brain damage. However, many domestic and foreign studies consistently agree that high fever often does not harm the brain except in the case of misdiagnosis. These are children with high fever with convulsions associated with encephalitis, or meningitis that doctors miss.

According to Dr. Dung, if a high fever is usually caused by a virus, the child twitches and then goes away without causing any harm. Parents also do not need to give children anticonvulsants.

The doctor also noted that when children had seizures in the past, parents were advised to quickly insert something such as fingers, spoons . to insert the baby's teeth to prevent them from biting their tongue.Current recommendations are the opposite , not for fingers or anything when a child is in a seizure.

How to handle when a child twitches as follows:

  1. First of all parents need to calm down, put the baby to lie on one side.In order for the airway to be cleared, the phlegm will flow out so that the child does not swallow because it is dangerous to swallow it.Note, keep the baby's head straight, not to bend the baby to breathe well.
  2. Leave the baby in a recumbent position, widen the clothes if you are wearing too tight, only for a while your child will stop convulsing.
  3. Should not many people surround the baby, who touch the limbs, lay people do not work but only harm more.Everyone needs to stay away from the baby to breathe and have oxygen to breathe.
  4. Absolutely do not put your fingers in your baby's mouth, even if your child is biting, even in an emergency.Wait for the child to get out of convulsions, then take a towel to the baby's mouth in case of a later seizure.
  5. Children awake, cry but still have high fever, use anal medicine or take medicine to reduce fever, then take the child to see if there is anything other than fever.
