Animal World director Mark Lightowler said it was an Atlas butterfly, a large-scale insect in Southeast Asia. This butterfly is often found in tropical and subtropical forests in Malaysia.
But Ramsbottom city is 9,000km from Malaysia. Why can butterflies appear in Ramsbottom?"Certain collector is raising it and he has come out of his collection , " Lightowler said.
The director added that he was surprised that the Altas butterfly could survive in British climatic conditions and even lay eggs.
In terms of wing area, the Atlas butterfly is the largest butterfly on the planet. Their wingspan can be up to 400cm 2 . They are also one of the world's longest wingspan. Their wingspan length is usually greater than 25cm. Female butterflies are larger and heavier than male butterflies.
"When people see Atlas butterflies, they will certainly be taken aback by their size , " Lightowler said.
