Huge data center of Facebook in the Arctic Circle
Mark Zuckerberg, Facebook CEO, shared rare images of Lulea high-tech data center in northern Sweden, 112km from the Arctic.
Servers in data centers often operate continuously and radiate huge amounts of heat. Therefore, Facebook chose to place its data center in locations like Lulea mining town, where the lowest temperature could reach -40 degrees Celsius in winter. This center is the "backbone" of Facebook in Europe.
The center is gigantic, but the idea starts from the doodle on the napkin of engineer Jay Park when he is traveling.
Data centers are increasingly important for Internet service companies like Facebook or Google. They are often guarded, only a few media organizations are allowed to visit.
The security here is set according to the standards of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO).Visitors were escorted by the private security patrol, through bulletproof doors and metal wall corridors, to four large server rooms, installed with 500 giant air-conditioning fans sucking cold air from outside.
Mark Zuckerberg said he liked the photo because it looked like a science fiction movie. These are big fans that draw air from the outside to cool tens of thousands of servers in the center.
The old hard drive will be crushed so that the data inside cannot be accessed, to protect private information.
The center was built in 2013 and is Facebook's first data center outside the United States.
It has a modern design.
Joakim Karlson said that working here requires high responsibility because it is an especially important center serving hundreds of millions of Facebook users.Every 18 months, global electronic data doubles.
