Iceland: Natural energy from volcanoes

Under the Government's plan, UK houses can be supplied with electricity from volcanoes in Iceland in the next decade. If this system is built it will provide 1/3 of the average electricity demand for this country and will help Britain end its dependence on energy.

Geothermal electricity generated a lot in Iceland will be brought into the country through a trans-ocean cable system. It is operated by high voltage several thousand miles long placed on the ocean floor.

British Energy Secretary Charles Hendry will arrive in Reykjavik (Iceland) in May to discuss the UK's connection with Iceland's green energy.

Minister Charles Hendry said: 'We actively discussed with the Icelandic government and they are very pleased with this plan'.

The Minister also stated that this measure will help reduce the amount of energy bill payments for families by allowing them access to the cheapest energy source at any time.

This low-carbon power source will be transported along cables in short distances from 600-950 miles.

Super wiring in Europe will connect wind and wave energy in the northern part of the continent with solar projects such as Desertec projects in Southern Europe and North Africa to supply supplying clean energy sources to meet the goal of combating climate change and reducing dependence on fossil imports.

There are currently two international energy connection projects from the UK to France, the Netherlands and 9 other projects being planned. The next project will be deployed in the spring linking Iceland and Wales, allowing green energy from Iceland's offshore wind to be transmitted to British homes.

Tony Glover of the Energy Network Association said the ability to link electricity supply to the rest of Europe will help keep prices competitive.
