At the seminar on "Achievements and Global Status of GM Crops" organized by the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development on February 13, Dr Ham said the world has created genetically modified crops from 80s of the 20th century. This is a new technology that requires a lot of time and investment. Vietnam has just begun to invest in research since the end of 2006, the time is too little but it has achieved some initial achievements and has created a number of genetically modified crops being evaluated in the laboratory. .

Currently, Vietnam is focusing on researching rice, corn, soybeans as important food and food crops.

According to scientists, the use of genetically modified crops needs to have testing and evaluation regulations of the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development. When the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development issues this regulation, genetically modified crops in the world are just starting to be deployed in Vietnam.

Dr. Randy Hautea, Global Coordinator of the International Agency for the Promotion of Biotechnology for Biotechnology (ISAAA), said that by 2009, the number of countries planting biotech crops The study has reached 25 countries - a new record compared to 13 countries in 2003. Currently Burkina Faso and Egypt have put genetically modified crops into cultivation.

The total area of biotech crops worldwide has so far reached 800 million hectares. In particular, of the 25 countries that grow GM crops, 15 are developing countries.
