Indonesia released four more young Javan rhinoceros

The globally threatened population of Javan rhinos has increased to 72 after four new individuals were discovered in the past few months.

Rhino experts are thrilled that the Javan rhinoceros population (Rhinoceros sondaicus) is increasing amid the extinction of this species due to poaching and habitat loss. The only remaining population is zoned in a single precarious habitat in Ujung Kulon National Park on the western tip of Java Island.

By the end of April this year, the estimated number of Javan rhinos dropped to 68 after the death of a minor individual due to serious injuries. However, a camera trap survey across the national park found 4 new young individuals.

'We are very happy to see new births taking place in Ujung Kulon. The number of Java trigonometry surpassing 70 individuals is a significant milestone , '' CeCe Sieffert, acting executive director of the International Rhino Foundation (IRF), said in a statement.

The Indonesian Ministry of Environment said new individuals were born of different females and were all discovered within the National Park boundary.

'Ujung Kulon National Park is considered safe from threats to the area so the wildlife there can breed. In addition, the area has programs to maintain the habitat, such as clearing invasive plants that disrupt the growth of vegetation eaten by rhinos ', said Indra Miningitasia Biodiversity, shared.

A decade ago, the Javan rhino population in the National Park was estimated at no more than 50 individuals, living in a protected area of only 787 km 2 . The efforts of the Indonesian government and organizations from around the world for many years have resulted in a steady increase in the number of rhinos.

The IRF says there has been no poaching in the park for more than 20 years and since 2012, at least one offspring has been born each year. A new marine patrol team is currently under training and is expected to begin monitoring the coastline of the park in January 2020.

'This is a testament to the commitment of the government and the national park to the protection of Java rhinos and their habitats , ' Sieffert said.
