Indonesia will be the first country to liquefy coal gas

Starting in 2011, Indonesia will carry out the conversion of CBM (Coal Bed Methane) into liquefied natural gas (LNG) and will be the first country in the world to do so.

Mr. Craig Steward, Managing Director of VICO Indonesia, said that currently, the infrastructure of a CBM conversion factory into LNG is about to be completed.

This year, the coal-to-gas facility in Sanga-Sanga, in East Kalimantan province, will be operational and fuel the local power plant.

Then, thanks to the continuous increase in coal gas production, the facility will provide Bontang refinery to convert into liquefied petroleum gas.

According to the exploration results, Indonesia is a country very rich in coal gas potential CBM, total reserves can be up to 450 tcf (tcf is a gas measuring unit, calculated by 1 million million cubic meters), in which in South Sumatra has 183 tcf, in Barito has 101.6 tcf and in Kutai has 80.4 fcf.

Indonesian energy experts believe in the feasibility of the plan and said VICO has signed a product sharing contract with the Indonesian Government in the CBM coal mining plan in Sanga-Sanga with storage. The amount of 4 tcf is distributed over an area of ​​about 1,700km ² .
