Indonesia: flood, 2,000 people evacuated
At least 2,000 people in the province of Gorontalo, Indonesia were forced to evacuate when floods raged in the eastern part of the country.
Speaking to reporters on October 27, Nurdin Mokoginta, Gorontalo provincial official, said continuous heavy rain in the past days has caused two rivers in Gorontalo city to overflow. From October 25, city residents began evacuating to higher lands to avoid flooding.
' To date, the total number of people evacuating about 2,000 people ' - Nurdin Mokoginta told Xinhua by phone, and said the number could still rise as the rain continued to pour into the area.
Meanwhile in the North Sumatra province, the VNA reported floods that killed at least two people and injured 91, while Central Sulawesi had 18 wounded and one missing. Long-day rains due to rain in Central Sulawesi province also paralyzed roads and caused many schools to temporarily shut down because of flooding.
Indonesia is often affected by floods and landslides due to the lack of afforestation areas which can help keep excess water due to heavy rain.
