The US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has approved for circulation in the country Vivitrol injections (also called Naltrexone) treat alcoholism.

Vivitrol works to prevent neurotransmitters in the brain, which are thought to cause the body to depend on alcohol and thus reduce the addiction. The advantage of this drug is that patients only need to inject once a month, while they have to take it daily if treated with tablets. Vivitrol can cause liver damage in case of overdose use.
