Is the Chinese script 8,000 years ago?
Chinese archaeologists are studying ancient stone sculptures they claim are evidence that Chinese writing appeared 8,000 years ago.
They have identified more than 2,000 image symbols on a cliff in northwestern China dating back 8,000 years ago. These symbols are very similar to the later forms of the Chinese script.
Previously, researchers believed that Chinese writing was 4,500 years ago. The sculpture Damaidi was discovered in the 1980s, covering more than 15 km 2 , containing more than 8,000 drawings, including the moon, sun, stars, spirits and hunting and grazing scenes.
'We found a number of symbols with both images and characters,' said Li Xiangshi, a stone sculpture analyst in Ningxia Autonomous Region. 'These symbols are similar to ancient Chinese hieroglyphs and probably Chinese ancient script'.
