V-KIST will be a multidisciplinary research and technology-oriented research institute with a contingent of researchers reaching international standards, technical infrastructure and modern research equipment, under a public model. with high autonomy mechanism.

The Ministry of Science and Technology has reserved the land at Hoa Lac Hi-Tech Park for the construction of V-KIST with an estimated area of more than 20 hectares.

Talking to PV in November 2012, Minister Nguyen Quan said that Vietnam chose KIST due to 4 reasons.Firstly , KIST is in the top 10 leading research institutes in the world, many Nobel laureates in technology often come to KIST to talk or lecture.

Secondly , Korea and Vietnam have many similarities. Korea built the KIST institute more than 10 years after the Korean War, when it was still poor and faced many difficulties. Thirdly , the model and operation mechanism of KIST is still Western style. Fourth , the Korean Government specifically supported this project and could provide ODA to Vietnam.

KIST (short for Korea Institute of Science and Technology) was established in 1966 in Seoul with the task of solving pressing technical problems for production, directing Korea to a society that develops on the basis of modern technology. KIST is also one of the important factors contributing to the development of science and technology, industrialization in Korea in the years 70-80.

In 2012, during a visit to Korea, Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung proposed that the Government support Vietnam to establish a model like KIST.
