Landscape of tsunami disaster by sea cable system

Scientists from the US National Oceanic and Atmospheric Center (NOAA) said countries can use the existing cable network to alert tsunamis, replacing alternative installations. It is very expensive to turn under the sea.

According to Manoj Nair, the University of Colorado lecturer, who is also a member of NOAA, the formation and propagation of tsunamis changes the electric field in the ocean. This change affects the transmission signal in the sea cable, although very weak.

'We estimate that the tsunami in 2004 changed the voltage in the sea cable in this area by about 500 mV (millimeters). The signal is small but enough to make a difference from the noise the computer receives on peaceful days , "Manoj Nair said.

Tsunami battles, which can spread at the speed of jets, are the result of phenomena such as continental displacement, or earthquakes and volcanic eruptions. Scientists say that tsunami phenomenon rarely occurs, however, countries still need to invest in warning systems because otherwise the consequences will be huge. In 2004, the tsunami in the Indian Ocean killed about 200,000 people.
