Make brightly colored tiles from the snail section

A Dutch designer has discovered an unusual way to create colorful bricks: use the stool of a snail.

Painter Lieske Schreuder came up with the idea of seeing a lot of snails in the garden. She discovered that snails do not only eat colored paper but also produce "products" of similar color, as their bodies do not absorb dyes.

To see how sharply the snail's shelf was, Schreuder collected nearly 1,000 snails and built a laboratory to measure the color of their waste, based on the paper they had eaten.

After discovering the great color reproduction capabilities of these creatures, Schreuder assembled their stools and put them in a specially designed to mix and compress the waste. The tiles are the same color.

According to the Dutch painter, the snail section can also be squeezed into a mold to create colorful wires, 5 mm thick. To create one meter of wire, it would take almost an hour and about six grams of manure - the total waste of nine snails in five days.

"My achievement is not just a bricklaying product, but also beautiful photographs of the process, so photos of snail shelling are part of the project , " said Schreuder. emphasize. All of her projects will be on public display in Rotterdam until January 5, 2014.
