Local media reported that more than 1,200 pelicans were scattered in the Piura and Lambayeque regions in the north. Government scientists have listed the number of dead birds on a strip of coast about 70km long. They found 592 seabirds, of which pelicans were 538, the BBC reported.
The Peruvian government announced that they were worried about the phenomenon of mass deaths of seabirds.
According to officials, the test results showed that the birds died within the past few days. A preliminary report confirmed that the birds did not die at sea but lost their lives on the beach. Experts will continue to examine the cause of the incident.
The bodies of pelicans are located on the area where hundreds of dolphin carcasses landed in the first few months of this year. Statistics from the Peruvian government show that at least 780 dolphins have washed ashore in the Lambayeque region between January and April. Peruvian officials predict that dolphins may die of a virus. .
