Modem 'super speed' reaches download speed ... 150Mb / sec

Comcast CEO Brian Roberts has been shocked by the introduction of a new modem technology that achieves 150 Mbps data download speeds, which is nearly 25 times faster than today's standard cable modems.

Speaking at the biggest cable show of the year - The Cable Show, Mr. Roberts said the production technology of the model is not much different from the current technology. For that reason, "super modem" will be able to ship within a few years.

The new technology is of vital importance, because the cable industry is facing fierce competition with FiOS, a TV-Internet service provided by Verizon on a new generation of fiber-optic networks. The maximum speed achieved via FiOS is currently 50 Mbps, which is quite low compared to the actual 100 Mbps capacity of the network.

Called DOCSIS 3.0, the new modem technology is developed by Cable TV Lab. 4 cables are interconnected, allowing for greater capacity. The laboratory said it will begin making a certificate for DOCSIS 3.0 by the end of the year.

Impressive performance

In addition, a standard modem is still slowing down to download clips and must be 16 minutes later, the new download process is complete.

Similarly, to download the 32-volume Britannica Encyclopedia and the Merriam-Webster visual dictionary, super modem takes less than 4 minutes. Meanwhile, a standard modem will take 3 hours and 12 minutes.

" 55 million words, 100,000 articles, more than 22,000 photos, maps and more than 400 clips: that's the amount of work that DOCSIS 3.0 has just dealt with.

In order to digest this volume of data, a dial-up modem will take 2 weeks, which I bet is that on the 13th day, a transmission error will turn all that downloaded earlier into a cup. You will have to reload from the beginning, "Mr. Roberts said.
