More than 100 people died from floods and heavy rains in Cambodia

Floods from the Mekong River and heavy rain over the past 3 weeks have killed at least 104 people and affected about 1.5 million people in Cambodia.

On October 9, Deputy Chairman of the National Committee for Prevention and Disaster of Cambodia Nhim Vanda said that the big flood this year affected 20 provinces.

Besides, floods also caused about 250,000 hectares of rice fields to be flooded, more than 400km of roads were damaged.

Currently local authorities are continuing efforts to evacuate people to the highlands, while the Cambodian Red Cross and many units donate, distribute emergency relief to the families at risk.

According to Mr. Vanda, as of October 9, the water level in the Mekong River is no longer a worrying level for the northeastern provinces, however, sudden floods are still attacking some Western provinces. North includes Battambang, Pailin, Oddar Meanchey and Banteay Meanchey.

It is estimated that the long-lasting flood this year will cause the equivalent of a historic flood in Cambodia in 2011 that killed 250 people and caused losses of about 521 million USD, mainly due to damaged roads and flooded rice fields .

Cambodia often suffers from floods between August and October every year.
