More than 3 million euros of biodiversity conservation investment

Germany will invest 3 million euros for the project "Conservation of biodiversity of forest ecosystems in Vietnam". 2010 is the year of biodiversity (global biodiversity) and this project is an effort to conserve biodiversity, especially the endangered genetic resources in Vietnam.

Vietnam has been recognized as a country with high biodiversity in the world and is one of the countries prioritized for global conservation. The diversity of terrain, land, landscape and climate is a very favorable basis, creating the diversity of both ecosystems, species and genetic resources of Vietnam.

On December 8, the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development (MARD) and the German Technical Cooperation (GTZ) organized a ceremony to launch the project: ' Conservation of biodiversity learning Vietnamese forest ecosystems '. The project was officially signed by MARD and GTZ 1 month ago, on November 8.

The project on biodiversity conservation of Vietnam's forest ecosystems in the first phase was implemented from August 2010 - July 2013 with a total investment of over 3 million euros, of which 3 million euros is the contribution of the German side; Vietnam contributes a counterpart fund of 300,000 euros. After successful implementation of Phase I will continue Phase II and III.

The objective of the project is to strengthen the capacity of biodiversity conservation and protection of Vietnam's forest ecosystems, especially at the national level and in nature conservation areas. The first phase of the project will be piloted in Ba Be National Park (Bac Kan), Na Hang Nature Reserve (Tuyen Quang), Pu Hu and Pu Luong Nature Reserve (Thanh Hoa), National Park. Bach Ma family (Thua Thien - Hue) and buffer zones of these national parks and reserves.

Dr. Riethmacher Guenter - Chief Representative of GTZ Vietnam, said: ' We hope the project will create good impacts on biodiversity conservation like other projects that Germany has implemented in Vietnam. ' .

2010 is the international year of global biodiversity. Vietnam Forest Ecological Biodiversity Conservation Project demonstrates Vietnam's efforts to conserve biodiversity and is also a positive contribution by Germany to help and support Vietnam's biodiversity conservation and in particular. is preserving precious genetic resources.

In terrestrial ecosystems, more than 13,200 plant species and about 10,000 animal species have been identified. In inland wetlands, more than 3,000 aquatic species have been identified.

The marine environment with 20 unique ecosystem types, characterizes the tropical sea and is the habitat of more than 11,000 marine species. In the last two decades, many new animal and plant species have been discovered and described, including many new genus and species for science; especially the animals and plants of the Lan family.

In Vietnam, ecosystems and biological resources play an important role in the country's economy and culture, reflected in the main values of natural and environmental protection (functional value). Ecological); economic (direct and indirect use value); and culture, society.

Biodiversity greatly contributes to the national economy, which is a basis for ensuring food security; maintenance of livestock and plant genetic resources; supplying materials for construction and fuel and pharmaceutical sources.

Currently, more than 25 million people are living in buffer zones and in special-use forests of Vietnam. It is this that puts great pressure on biodiversity conservation. Mr. Nguyen Duc Nghi - Deputy Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development, said: ' Vietnam's special-use forests are being seriously degraded due to many pressures: economic development, urbanization, construction of infrastructure. floors, logging, forest products, wildlife hunting and negative impacts of climate change '.
