NASA released a new photo of a mysterious Aboriginal carving in Australia

The US space and space agency (NASA) has just released a new image of Marree Man, a giant drawing in South Australia that has puzzled scientists for decades.

The image was taken by the Operational Land Imager (OLI) satellite on June 22, 2019 and published by the US space agency on December 29.

The image of a hunter with what could be a stick (or boomerang) in his hand was chosen as NASA's Day Image.

The mysterious carving was first discovered in 1998, when a pilot noticed the petroglyphs on the plateau, but faded with time.

The image is located in the desert of South Australia, near a town called Marree , 590km from the city of Adelaide.

According to NASA, these lines are barely visible in natural color images collected by OLI in 2013.

Marree Man was restored in 2016 when a team from the famous town of Marree re- worked the grooves to keep the man figure from fading from erosion. The June image shared by NASA shows the results of these efforts.

The rehabilitation team believes that their preservation will last longer than expected. They created wind gutters, designed to store water and promote vegetative growth. They hope that the figure of the man will eventually turn green.

No one claimed to be the author of this carving. In 1999, a year after the engraving was first discovered, a series of anonymous faxes were sent to local officials, directed to the area near the head of Marree Man where the placard was left. American flags, Olympic circles and quotes from a book on aboriginal hunting practices.

In 2018, an Australian businessman announced that he would award a $ 5,000 reward to anyone who could give specific evidence to prove the origin of the carved figure.
