Despite being nearly the same size as North America, the hole in the Antarctic ozone layer is still the second smallest gap in the past two decades.

This is the latest announcement by scientists from the US Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) and the US Aerospace Agency (NASA) on October 24 on the results of the study of the above holes " shield " protects the Earth.

Scientists from the two agencies said the hole in the ozone layer in Antarctica formed in September and October, has size of 21.32 million square kilometers, nearly the same size as the three US countries, Mexico and Canada. Meanwhile, the biggest hole of the ozone layer so far is 29.9 million square kilometers, recorded in 2000.

According to US scientists, the ozone layer protecting the Earth from dangerous ultraviolet rays began to appear holes in the 1980s of the last century due to chlorofluorocarbon emissions (CFC for short). This gas is now virtually eliminated thanks to an international convention signed in 1987.
