New effect of banana peel
Banana peels can be extremely effective natural water purifiers, according to ANI news agency .
Chemical expert Gustavo Castro and colleagues at the University of Sao Paulo (Brazil) claim that chopped banana peels work better than some other materials in separating toxic metal contaminants from water.
Mining processes, wastewater from farms, and industrial waste can carry heavy metals that cause environmental damage and health problems such as lead and copper into water sources.
Measures to separate heavy metals from water are very expensive now, and some of the substances used in this process are also toxic.
Previous studies have shown some crop waste, such as coconut fiber and peanut shells, can remove toxins from water.
Mr. Castro's team found that chopped banana peels could quickly remove lead and copper from the river water as well as other materials.
They note that a banana peel filter system can be used 11 times without losing its metal suction properties.
Banana peels are noteworthy water purifiers because of their low cost and no need to replenish chemicals.
The research results are published in the latest issue of the Industrial and Engineering Chemistry Research Journal of the American Chemical Society.
