New York alarmed because the house was cold after super typhoon

Tens of thousands of people who were not home after Super Typhoon Sandy needed support when electricity was still lost and the weather was getting colder in New York, the political leaders here warned.

New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg said the number of homeless people is currently around 30,000-40,000.

Meanwhile, US Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano, said federal agencies are looking for apartments and hotel rooms so people don't have to live in refugee centers.

So far at least 106 people in the United States have been killed by Hurricane Sandy, while in New York City alone there are 40 people.

Before the American storm, Sandy killed 69 people in the Caribbean. On Sunday November 4, the Haitian government called for humanitarian assistance from other governments and international organizations. Aid agencies in Haiti have voiced concern about the consequences left by Sandy in the country, as crops are destroyed, thousands of people are left homeless. New York governor Andrew Cuomo said homes without electricity could not be reached when temperatures were low. Speaking at a Sunday news conference, Mr Cuomo said those who refused to leave home would have no other choice.

He also said public transport will be increasingly overloaded on Monday, when many people return to work and schools reopen.

Although fuel shortages are falling, Cuomo urges New Yorkers not to store gasoline, as supplies are coming.

New York City opened warning centers in areas without electricity, giving blankets to those who still refused to leave their homes.'You can die from the cold. You may die from a fire when you light candles or light a fireplace ' , he said.

Temperatures on Sunday dropped 4 degrees Celsius and are expected to drop to -1 degrees Celsius on Monday.

About 730,000 people in New York state still have no electricity, including 130,000 in New York City.

Nearly 1 million people in the neighboring state of New Jersey suffered the same fate while gasoline was distributed.

Hundreds of people plan to participate in the annual ghost running competition in New York, but this year canceled because of the storm, participated in a run to raise funds and transport relief.

Hurricane Sandy is also affecting the preparations for the US presidential election on Tuesday.

New Jersey residents without a home by Hurricane Sandy can vote by email or fax. They are registered as 'voters living abroad'.

Meanwhile, Bloomberg said the New York government will do "anything possible" to help the election agency, because they "meet really many problems".
