Nghe An receives the title of the world biosphere reserve

With an area of ​​more than 1.3 million hectares, stretching across 9 districts, 2 nature reserves, a national forest . April 29, the West Nghe An Biosphere Reserve was awarded the title of Zone by UNESCO. world biosphere reserve.

The West Nghe An Biosphere Reserve has a very high biodiversity, representing most types of tropical rain forests in the north of the Truong Son range. This is the only area of ​​the North and North Central regions with a large area of ​​primeval forest being well protected, especially the Vietnam-Laos border area.

Forest coverage in the whole area is over 80% with many high mountain peaks such as Pu Xai Lai Leng, Pu Den Dinh, Pu Mat . , is an ideal place to conduct research programs on climate change .

Biomass conservation value of the biosphere reserve is represented in the presence of nearly 2,500 species, including about 2,000 higher plants; 130 species of large and small animals; 295 species of birds; 54 species of amphibians and reptiles; 83 species of fish and 39 species of bat . In which there are more than 70 species of plants and 80 species of animals in Vietnam Red Book, such as: Sao La, Red- shanked Douc, Large-bearing, Zebra-type Rabbit, Sour-oil .

In particular, this world biosphere reserve also includes outstanding cultural and humanistic features of Kinh, Thai, Kho Mu, Tho, Mong, Dan Lai and O Du communities living in the biosphere region.

On April 29, after awarding the title to Nghe An Provincial People's Committee, Katherine Muller Marin, Head of UNESCO's representative office in Vietnam, commented: "This is the largest living laboratory in Southeast Asia, contributing to an important part in global climate change mitigation and adaptation research '.

Vietnam currently has eight world biosphere reserves, including six UNESCO-approved reserves.
