Fishermen Khalid Al Sinani and two friends found rare vomit dumps of sperm whales off Qurayat, Oman, Times of Oman reported on November 2. They saw 80 kg of ambergris floating on the sea and using rope to pull the object to shore."After making sure it's ambergris, we start cutting it out to dry and resell , " Al Sinani said.
Ambergris is a secretion from the sperm whale, which helps soften all hard or sharp objects that fish swallow. When sperm is emptied out, ambergris hardens in the process of floating on the water and washes ashore. Dubbed "floating gold" because of its high economic value, ambergris is an important ingredient in the production of high-grade perfumes, which helps the scent stay longer on the skin.
A businessman from Saudi Arabia offered to buy ambergris from fishermen for $ 2.8 million. However, an auction will be held to determine the final sale price.
