Declaring at the inauguration on October 2, Director General of the International Energy Agency (IEA) Maria van der Hoeven said the operation of the plant marked an important milestone in the history of development. CO2 recovery and storage technology , showing Canada's efforts to reduce this toxic gas. According to the official, the new technologies allow carbon dioxide to be recovered from burning fuel or through industrial processes and storing this gas underground. The IEA also forecasts that by 2050, this process will contribute to reducing 1/6 of global emissions.

Observers have assessed that if successful, this $ 1.25 billion new project will attract investors' attention to using cheap coal to produce electricity in the context of many countries. for closing power plants, a major source of greenhouse gas emissions leading to global warming.

SaskPower currently has three coal-fired power plants and these are factories that emit 70 percent of greenhouse gas emissions. With this project, SaskPower estimates that it will recover about 1 million tons of CO2 every year, equivalent to the recall of 250,000 cars in circulation. Some similar projects are currently being implemented in other areas in Canada as well as in the US, Saudi Arabia and Australia.
