Paraguay announced a state of emergency for dengue
The dengue epidemic has left 10 people dead and 15,000 others infected since the beginning of the year, forcing the government of Paraguay to declare a state of emergency in 60 states across the country.
According to Aristides Gonzalez, head of the Paraguay National Emergency Office, President Nicanor Duarte signed an ordinance to declare a medical and environmental emergency. He also said he would meet with government members and prepare an action plan to prevent the disease.
Earlier, on February 27, Paraguayan health officials warned that there was evidence of a more virulent strain of dengue and had never been discovered in Paraguay. This strain attacks the patient's liver, heart, lungs and brain, causing high mortality.
