Paris: Auction for 15,000-year-old mammoths
Christie Paris collectibles group has just opened an auction of huge Siberia mammoth skeleton with a life of over 15,000 years. The owner of this precious skeleton spent $ 352,196 to own it.
Siberian mammoth skeleton 3.8m high and 4.8m long has been displayed in the auction with a fossil rhino skeleton, a fossilized cave bear skeleton, fossil dinosaur eggs and more 550 other antiques. The buyer's name was not published, but auction house Christie said it had sold the mammoth skeleton for $ 352,196 while the rhino skeleton sold for $ 135,460.
Although these precious antiques are owned by a private corporation, Paris archaeologists are not satisfied with the auction held by Christie.
Mr. Pascal Tassy, Professor of Archeology working at the Paris Museum of Natural History said selling these rare relics was a big mistake.
'We live in a era of freedom and democracy that everything can be bought with money. Previously, collectors often donated artifacts to museums to contribute to the scientific research process. Now they use them to earn pocket money, ' said Pascal Tassy.
