Power sail
Japan's Eco Marine Power said it is testing a system of sails that exploit wind power and harness solar energy.
It is expected that the system will be equipped for large cargo ships, both help save fossil energy and help protect the environment.
The automatic control system adjusts the solar sails to the optimum wind speed.
They work even when the ship docked, so that there is no need to run auxiliary diesel. Eco Marine Power's Greg Atkinson says that tests started in Osaka are now complete with command and control systems.
According to UPI, this sail system will save 10-20% of energy depending on the type of vessel.
