Pregnancy after uterine transplant
Scientists successfully removed the uterus from the female sheep and then transplanted it again, which the animal could still become pregnant.
So far, scientists have succeeded in the first step in uterine grafting technology: They remove the uterus of four female sheep, then re-attach it (to another artery) in their body. . Now all 4 animals are in the late stages of pregnancy. They will give birth through surgery at the end of this April.
Within the next few weeks, scientists will make the next attempt: transfer the uterus between two different sheep - the step they hope to be the first successful uterine transplant on large animals. .
The study was conducted by Mats Brannstrom at Sahlgrenska Science Institute in Gothenburg, Sweden and colleagues performed 14 female sheep.
