Prohibit selling plastic water bottles to reduce garbage

A city government in the United States prohibits the sale of water bottles with a capacity of less than one liter to reduce plastic waste and encourage people to drink water from public taps.

City officials of Concord, Massachusetts, USA, announced that a ban on the sale of plastic bottles of less than one liter will start to take effect on January 1. This is the victory of environmental activists in the process of lobbying for the past three years.

Many residents of Concord city said that the ban on sale
Plastic bottles with a capacity of less than one liter are meaningless decisions.

The police will remind the violator for the first time. But if the violation continues for the second time, people will have to pay a fine of 25 USD. The fine will increase to 50 USD for subsequent violations.

However, many people commented that the ban was a meaningless decision, because they could buy bottled water when they came to another city. In addition, the ban is only valid for pure drinking water, not for other beverages.

Concord is not the first city to ban the sale of water in plastic bottles. In 2009, the Bundanoon city government in Australia also issued a ban on the use and sale of water-filled plastic bottles.

More than 90 universities in the US and around the world have restricted the use of bottled water in plastic bottles. Some local governments also implement similar guidelines.

Environmental activists say Americans consume 50 billion plastic water bottles a year. If people throw away plastic bottles and not collect them for recycling, they will become very sustainable garbage in the environment, because plastic only completely decomposes after hundreds of years.
