Red-eared turtle: 'Slaughter, freeze' instead of 'destroy'

On October 1, Vinh Long Provincial People's Committee accepted the proposal of Can Tho Seafood Import and Export Joint Stock Company (Caseamex), slaughtered more than 18,000 red-eared turtles to freeze as food instead of the destruction projects as before.

Under this plan, the slaughter time for all toxic red ear turtles will take place in 3 days from October 1 to 3.

TTX Vietnam said that before, on September 30, the deadline for destruction of red ear turtles was decided by Vinh Long People's Committee, Caseamex sent a letter to the People's Committee asking for slaughtering on site, transportation and supply the number of red-eared turtles that the company imported from April to avoid affecting the environment, reducing economic losses for the company.

The Ho Chi Minh City Law Department also said that on the same day, in front of the functional industry, the people of Caseamex tried to cut the turtle's neck and cut the meat. Caseamex guarantees within 3 days to slaughter all of the red-eared turtles.

On the morning of October 1, after meeting with the functional departments, Vinh Long People's Committee issued a letter of approval to propose the slaughtering and freezing of red ear turtles of Caseamex. In the afternoon of the same day, workers of Caseamex began to slaughter at the captive pond in Mai Dam.

According to Casemex's slaughter plan, the number of red-eared turtles will be cut to death, boiling water to remove the chilled meat. Blood and viscera are put into PE bags for destruction, tortoise shells are dried and sold as animal feed.
