Russian boy invents software to identify birds

Alexander Dumchikov - a senior student from the Bashkiria Republic of the Russian Federation, wrote a computer software that could identify the songs of different birds.

The Russian Federal Academy of Sciences said it was an interesting and promising invention.

Dumchikov studied computers at the age of three and won several awards at various competitions many times. The latest invention gives the student a prize in Russia's "Future Scientists" contest.

Associate Professor of Bashkir University of Education, Mr. Marat Bogdanov, the research guide for Dumchikov, said the software uses method of analyzing data components and capable of classifying songs 164 species of birds . Currently this student is perfecting the program to be able to determine the voice of each individual bird.

The analysis of audio signals helps provide information about the composition, quantity and migration activity of the feathers.

Mr. Bogdanov said an important element of bird monitoring is not to disturb them in the natural environment, especially during the breeding season when birds are hatching eggs or raising their children. The sound is now the main monitoring information source.

Researchers can place tape recorders in the forest and regularly check. This device is very convenient to track night birds.

With the invention of Dumchikov, bird researchers no longer have to sit for hours in the shade of trees, waiting for a bird to sing. The new software will identify, process the sound obtained and classify the tone.

The Russian Academy of Sciences has ordered Dumchikov to write a version of the upgrade program that distinguishes the individual vocals.
