Russian Church established the Theology Department in nuclear university

Russian scientists expressed opposition after the Orthodox Church announced its plan to establish theology department in the country's leading nuclear research facility.

The Russian Orthodox Church announced that Moscow National University of Atomic Studies will have more theology in the autumn of this year, RIA Novosti reported.

Immediately, many scientists voiced their opposition to the Church's plan. They argue that religious leaders violently intervene in secular education. 91 members of the Russian Academy of Sciences signed a letter to express their opposition. Later, 3,260 people sent letters of protest to the Church on the Internet.

"I think that science and religion are two conflicting fields. Establishing the Department of Theology in Moscow National Atomic Research University is a strange and ridiculous idea. I will never forget the sight of me. walking between buildings in the hospital to take a little liquid nitrogen and meet a group of cross processors, for me it was a funny sight , " said Yaroslav Sadovsky, lecturer of the school's plasma physics department. . Sadovsky is an atheist.

Meanwhile, the representative of the Church said that theology will not only study theology.

"The faculty of theology department will teach other humanities, such as the History of Christian thought or the History of Art," said Vladimir Shmaliy, head of the Church's postdoctoral training program. expression.

In addition, Shmaliy asserted that it was the school's leadership that had the idea of ​​establishing the Department of Theology.

Many prestigious universities in the West, such as Harvard and Oxford, have departments related to theology. Even those schools established monasteries and religious schools. However, those faculties, monasteries and schools were born in the 15th to the 19th centuries, when Christianity dominated the West.

The results of an opinion survey on higher education conducted by Expert Business Magazine show that Moscow National Atomic Research University ranks third among the best higher education institutions in Russia.
