Sad story behind love locks

The story takes place in the town of Vrnjacka Banja in 1914, when Europe is facing a military crisis. Young men were forced to join the army and many died in a hopeless war and had no end.

Relja boy is no exception. Like many other young people, Relja does not want to leave his family and especially the love of his life - the girl named Nada.

Nada and Relja love each other deeply and are not hesitant to decide to "bind each other" with an engagement ceremony. They hope for a perfect home. However, when Austria declared war on Serbia, Relja had no choice but to fight to defend the country.

Although sad, Nada always believes that Ralja will survive and soon return to her. The war is over, but Ralja never comes back. Not because of bombs, but because he fell in love with another girl in Corfu, leaving Nada in anticipation.

Suffering from being betrayed, Nada sank in sadness and eventually left in solitude, closing a tearful love affair.

The story of Nada and Ralja spread in the town. The girls are afraid of their lovers as easily as Ralja. And to protect their love, they bought the keys that wrote their names and lovers and then attached them to the bridge where Nada and Ralja had met.

The key is then thrown into the river. They believe that in this way, their love will last forever.

This sad story gradually sinks into oblivion until the Serbian poet Desanka Maksimovic recalls it in his Prayer for Love poem. Since then, hundreds of young couples have come to know this legend and bought the keys engraved with names to attach to the bridge every year, making it a famous love bridge - Most Ljubavi bridge .

The tradition is quickly reproduced in many major cities in the world like Paris and Barcelona. However, it was later forced to remove the locks to avoid pressure on the bridges. On the contrary, where this story begins, locks remain intact to this day.
