Sea level will rise 60m if all fossil fuels are burned
If people do not control the need to consume fossil fuels, the planet will be engulfed by sea water that can rise up to 60 meters.
Out of fossil fuels, the Earth will sink deep in the sea
Burning fossil fuels is the main cause of greenhouse effect and many other unintended consequences such as melting ice, storms, droughts, extreme weather .
However, it is people who are promoting the exhaustion of natural resources , including fossil fuels, mainly to serve the needs of more than 7 billion people.
According to scientific studies, if humans burn all of the Earth's remaining fossil fuels, they will cause ice melting phenomenon with extremely strong speed in Antarctica. The sea level is expected to rise up to 30 meters by the end of this millennium (3000) and more than double, ie 60 meters in the next thousand years.
The lead author of the study, Ken Caldeira, of the Carnegie Institute of Science (USA), said: "If we are constantly releasing carbon dioxide into the sky, the lands are home to more than a billion people. someday will be under the sea ".
The study was published in Science Advances magazine. This is the first study to create a model that shows the impact of burning fossil fuels on the entire Antarctic ice sheet.
Emission trends reduce the thickness of Antarctic ice sheets (currently up to 3 km thick).
According to the study, about 10 trillion tons of carbon exist in fossil fuels such as coal, oil, and gas. With the current consumption rate, there will be about 6-8% of them emitted in the next 60-80 years. This will cause instability in the West Antarctic ice sheet.
According to co-author Anders Levermann of the Potsdam Institute, which specializes in the study of climate change impacts, the West Antarctic ice sheet has begun to turn into uncontrolled melting.
However, Levermann insists that if you do not want coastal cities such as Tokyo, Hong Kong, Shanghai, Calcutta, Hamburg and New York to suffer from submerged seawater, you need to put all your protection into action. for the East Antarctic ice sheet.
In recent years, scientists have set a target of only 2 degrees Celsius before the end of the century for all humanity. That means, people need to control global warming not exceeding 2 degrees Celsius, while maintaining the lowest sea level rise.
However, if the Earth's temperature continues to increase in the coming years, it will be hard to imagine the terrible effects of it on humans.
