When the eclipse left a dark streak on America in the past week, millions of people looked up to the sky to witness one of the spectacular performances of this nature.

But there are others observed from space and they see another scene when the sprawling colors of the Earth are interfered with by a black array.

A Japanese weather satellite, named MTSAT, captured the shadow of the moon when it appeared in Asia on Monday morning May 20 before it passed through the Pacific Ocean and international time zone. Later this phenomenon was seen in the western states of the United States on Sunday afternoon.

When the darkness looks small compared to the Earth, don't think the moon is just a small rock in the sky. In fact, the moon size is only a quarter of the size of the Earth, but the distance close to our planet plus the fact that this is an annular eclipse that the sun is not completely covered by the moon for the darkness to look just like a bruise that grazes the surface of our planet.
