Should hold hands to remember more effectively

When you clench your right hand, your brain remembers information faster and you will remember it more easily if you hold your left hand.

Ruth Propper and colleagues from Montclair University in the United States conducted an experiment to determine the relationship of fist action to memory, Science Daily reported.

The team divided volunteers into 4 groups. Every volunteer must memorize a list of 72 words and then list each word.

A group gripped the right hand as they tried to remember the word and when recalling the words from the list. The second group gripped the left hand while memorizing it while recalling the word. Those in the third group gripped a hand while memorizing (left or right hand) and holding the other hand when reminiscing. The fourth group does not hold hands in both stages.

The results showed that the group held the right hand while memorizing and then holding the left hand when reminiscing remembered the most words compared to the other three groups.

'This finding shows that some of the body's basic movements will temporarily alter the way the brain works and increase memory capacity. Future studies will help us discover other possibilities of fist behavior - such as fists that can make language or space aware or not , 'Propper said.

The researchers also added that they need to carry out follow-up studies to check whether the result may be related to the ability to increase visual memory (for example, recalling a face, a space, or location where they put the key).
