The ruins you just saw are the ancient citadel of Sigirya - also known as the "Lion Stone" - one of Sri Lanka's travel symbols.

This ruin lies on a flat rock, up to 200m high, looking far away like a kneeling lion. According to historical records, this is the palace of King Kassapa in the period of 477 - 495, and was also the capital of this country.

The king chose to build a palace in such a rugged terrain because he was the son of his concubine, then killed his father and stole exile Prince Moggallana. After worrying about the return of the exiled Prince, he chose to build a palace on a cliff.

However, 20 years later, Prince Moggollana returned to regain the throne, causing King Kassapa to commit suicide. The new king later moved the capital to Anuradhapura, and Sigirya palace was used as a monastery. Over the years, the kingdom declined, the palace became ruins, until the British found it in 1907.
